I have reached a stage in life where I have realized that I have eaten way too much junk food and now I actually crave healthy. Yeah! You read that right. This ravenous carnivore craves some healthy food. We have these weapons of mass destruction on every street corner, and they’re called Kebabs, Shawarmas, Cheeseburgers, French fries, Chindian food (Indo-Chinese street food) which have done more damage than good to me, but hey, I am not complaining! It’s just that it’s always better to avoid stuff that’s weakening you. Mind you, I said avoid, not stop eating them, I can’t, rather I won’t!
Clearly my tongue rules my heart but I love my mother way too much to deny her anything and me eating healthy food is one of the many wishes that she’s had for a long, long time now. One will seldom want to do what other wishes but hey, I love my mother! So what did I do? I ate at a restaurant which is driven by the idea of healthy but delicious food. I ate at TJ’s Brew Works!
Tj’s is a microbrewery, yes; in fact one of India’s first microbreweries who brew and serve handcrafted beer but this teetotaler was there for their food, for their healthy food.
TJ’s Brew Works at Amanora mall is beautifully laid out with cubicle seating arrangements and lush green landscapes around huge open windows which overlook the sky. Trust me, that’s some view! Talk about food? At TJ’s Brew Works, a culinary revolution has brewed, for they are serving beers made of Quinoa and Buckwheat. Are the Health freaks reading?
TJ Venkateshwaran (founder of Tjs Brew works) has partnered with Girish Monie and together they have introduced a menu created with some of the most nutritious, high-protein, high-fiber and low GI grains – The Spent grain menu!
The Spent grain Menu
Spent grain, the leftover malt and adjuncts after the mash has extracted most of the sugars, proteins, and nutrients, constitutes as much as 85 percent of a brewery’s total by-product. TJ’s BrewWorks has devised innovative ways to prevent their spent grain from going to waste and hence are entitled as the very first venture in the country to curate a spent grain menu.
Cream of Mushroom and thyme soup, served with spent rolls was definitely an upgrade from the condensed cream of mushroom soup of my childhood. Oh and the spent rolls had a beautiful chocolaty glaze and went brilliantly with the creamy soup. Also tried a bit of Quinoa pepita salad, because health! I’ve had salads with feta, I’ve liked them, I had a salad with quinoa and cherry vinaigrette at TJ’s and to my surprise I liked it more.
Spent crusted jalapeño and cheese poppers (Vegetarian Appetizer) – They had a crisp golden crust and soft melted cheese interior – all in the perfect bite sized package. The seasoned cream cheese filling melted beautifully without expanding and rupturing as many other cheeses do.
TJ’s signature BBQ Wings (Non vegetarian Appetizer) – Game day or any day, BBQ wings are always a winner! Loved TJ’s version of the yummy honey barbeque sauce and that’s one dish I’d visit TJ’s again for.
Mediterranean Lamb Burger on spent roll – An absolute favorite! I felt as If I am on a Greek kick, loved the combination of fresh herbs and minced meat with a tinge of rosemary. The low-carb bun is the talk of the town and rightly so! Healthy food baby!
Nudo Pizzas – “Girish Monie, the man behind Nudo, started this as a personal project when he realized his health was at an all-time low, years ago. From concentrating on eating whatever he wanted to and working it all out (and not seeing results) he reversed the process and saw results immediately. He concentrated more on the diet, less on the workouts. He was amazed at the results, and decided to share his story with the world in the form of Nudo.” That’s an excerpt from Protima Tiwary’s blog. (A fitness blogger)
I did try Nudo pizza and I don’t really have much to say about them except for the fact that they are the healthiest of Pizzas served in India. Nudo which means ‘nude’ in Italian is Gluten free, Grain free and Guilt free pizzas. The choice of bases varies from Quinoa to buckwheat and from amaranth to almond. There is also a unique Cauliflower and whey protein option, yeah, quite unique that is.
Sweet as can be!
Chocolate Pave – Either try the sugar free or the gluten free version or try them both. A low on calorie dessert with bittersweet chocolate as its main component, Healthy binging, they say.
Lemon grass Pannacotta – Sugar free/grain free/Vegan dessert! The delicate flavors and subtle floral and citrus aroma of lemon grass are paired perfectly in this pannacotta and it sure was a delight.
The culinary inspirations are worth all the hype at TJ’s and the introduction of the new health conscious menu makes a visit worthwhile to this beast of a place!
