COCO – Sushi & Bar! The bling is as good as the sting.

Year 2017 has seen some amazing restaurant and club launches in Pune city but nothing quite like COCO – Sushi & Bar. Yes, Coco – Sushi & Bar, a member’s only club, located at Onyx tower and owned by the effervescent Kunal Mhaske. Ladies and gentlemen I am not talking about some regular night club but Coco, which is far more prestigious, actually requires a membership and is definitely the buzz of our beloved IT town. Money and lineage are usually the tickets in, as well as a hefty dose of social capital.

If you ask me of a key characteristic feature of this club I’d say this, it offers you utter exclusivity! If your caliber analysis seems high enough, I’d suggest you put your name on the members list of COCO – Sushi & Bar! How? I will conclude the post with the procedure!

I happened to be a part of a food tasting event (Thanks to Svetlana Sawant of Carpe Diem) at this premier club wherein no luxury is spared, be it the classy interiors (Read Black), polished furniture, fizzy drinks and of course exotic food. Coco provides nothing but the best in food, entertainment and general atmosphere!

Here’s how my evening unfolded at Pune’s first ever members only club Coco – Sushi & Bar.

The food is influenced by a lot of different flavors, but predominately from Japan with traces from all across South East Asia. It was a great experience at Coco and throughout the night the dishes showcased great innovative thinking in both technique and execution. The dishes were refined, neatly plated and very well balanced. A few of my favorites include Beijing duck thong, Pop Chicken Sushi Roll, Seafood Suimui, California Sushi Roll (Vegetarian) among others.

Spicy Squid Salad

This delicious spicy seafood salad combines the four elements of Thai cooking – Salty, sweet, bitter and sour! Made of baby squids, this was the first time I tried something like this and all I could think about was Exotica!

Pop Chicken Sushi Roll & California Sushi Roll

I totally loved both of these, in fact preferred, for the first time that is, the vegetarian California Sushi roll over the Pop Chicken Sushi Roll. The former was absolutely perfect with the right veggie fillings like carrots and avocados, California rolls are not normally vegan but trust me Coco altered it well.

Chicken Shiitake Dumplings

Most versions of these pot sticker dumplings are stuffed with a red meat based filling, but this one, made with chicken and mushrooms, is especially delicious. The pairing of dark-meat chicken and dried shiitake mushrooms is distinctly Chinese, and it gives these dumplings a fragrant, gamy taste.

Crispy lotus Stem Chips

Hot and spicy bowl of deliciousness! Its mind blowing crispiness combined with a sweetish flavor makes it a hit, despite being a vegetarian (Lotus stem) dish I called for another helping and for the first time I had nothing to whine about vegetables.

Crispy Conji Spiced Lamb

Although the other dishes were very well balanced, this turned out to be an exception, I found it a tad too salty and also the meat wasn’t as tender, maybe a one off but it left me disappointed.

Sesame Sichuan Snapper

That came in because I chose it. Between a lemongrass fish cake and a Sesame Sichuan Snapper, what is it that you would choose? Exactly! I feel you! I love snapper, I love glass noodles and I love medium spicy gravies. The Sesame Sichuan Snapper had it all. So here’s a recommendation – Try it at the earliest!

Oh and I almost forgot, remember I mentioned about the Beijing duck thong in the beginning? Yes, I liked it too, it’s a soup! A Duck soup, yeah you read that right, perfect soul satisfying soup in the breezy and rainy evenings.

The desserts sadly didn’t taste as good as they looked. The problem with these desserts is not their taste so much as the way they taunt you with their fanciness. They rub their fanciness right in your face. They think they’re better than you, or rather, they know they’re better than you. “I represent a luxurious lifestyle you could never possibly achieve,” the desserts whisper. Those fancy little swirls!

Tender coconut mousse – Rs 160/-

Smoked chocolate mousse cake – Rs 180/-

Honey panna cotta – Rs180/-

Wasabi ice cream – Rs180/-

The Chocolate Mousse cake and the Wasabi ice cream however were the saviors that night and are to be tried for sure. The wasabi ice cream is a very innovative frozen dessert which has a very subtle taste of the unusual wasabi, quite nice!

And now, for the finale, as I promised, here’s how to be a member of this elite club.
The application is a standard invite-only, member-recommended process. Fees, however, are undisclosed, so you’ll have to use your imagination when it comes to the price tag of this opulent Pune business circle or simply call 7397999999.

P.S: I am a member of Coco – Sushi & Bar and yes I can recommend, Cheers!
Also, i just got to know that there is no fees yet! So go ahead, call that number and get your membership card right away! Limited period offer.
